Rebuilding your carburetor is good. Having a consistent float height value is better.

You should know that:

The position of your float changes the richness of your carburetor. If the fuel level in the bowl is too high, your settings will be richer, with a risk of bowl overflow and flooding. On some carburetor models, fuel can even flow out on its own through the auxiliary venturis.
The weight of your float must match the original value. Be careful with floats from other carburetor models.
If you have a multi-carburetor setup, the floats must have the same weight.
It can also happen that a float is no longer sealed and fills with fuel.
The measurement must be taken vertically with the gasket in place, the tang resting on the needle valve ball, without compressing it.
